Armed with a mere $500, this determined mother of three turned humble beginnings to an e-commerce empire that included multiple exquisite stores in Beverly Hills. This is the story of an unstoppable force who revolutionized an entire industry, one piece of jewelry at a time.
"I’ve always had a love of natural gemstones, and noticed a white space in the jewelry market for quality styles and stones at an affordable price. So, I decided to create them myself."
Kendra Scott’s Career Journey
In a world where affordable jewelry seemed elusive, she refused to settle. Her deep passion for design had always burned within her, but it was during her first pregnancy that she found the courage to unveil her very first jewelry collection. Eager to enhance her skills, she immersed herself in a series of classes at local beading shops and a community college, honing her craft with every lesson. She crafted her first line and started a mission to convince Austin boutiques to embrace her creations. The year 2002 marked the launch of her eponymous jewelry line named Hat Box, beginning within the confines of a spare bedroom in her home—an endeavor that sprouted after the joyous arrival of her firstborn son.
It was 2008 when a sudden turn of events occurred—her wholesalers vanished overnight, leaving her without the partnerships she relied on. This challenging period left Scott devastated, as her savings depleted and her business relied solely on a line of credit that needed repayment within a few months. Despite her efforts to seek investors, she encountered constant rejection and discouragement. Scott was left with a heavy heart and the label of a failed business owner and college dropout. The question lingered: What was next?
Rise from Adversity
Word of mouth began to spread, and demand for Scott's jewelry grew exponentially. She recalls, "I realized that I wasn't a business failure with Hat Box—I was simply focusing on the wrong product." Empowered by this revelation, Scott channeled her savings—merely $500—into supplies and materials. Starting small, she started her journey again that involved going door-to-door, her newborn baby cradled in a carrier, while carrying a tea box overflowing with her jewelry collections.
The demand for her jewelry continued to grow organically. It wasn't Scott who started spreading the word; it was her customers, her closest friends, and her family. They recognized the magic she had woven into each piece. Their belief in her talent and the relentless momentum behind her creations shattered any doubts that lingered. It was a defining moment, one that affirmed her path and propelled her forward.
Milestones and Achievements
The brand soared, reaching milestones such as the opening of a boutique on Beverly Hills' Rodeo Drive in 2011. Today, Kendra Scott boasts over 100 stores, including prestigious locations like Bloomingdales. Scott is among the wealthiest businesswomen in the US. Driven by her desire to make a difference, Scott launched the "Kendra Cares initiative" in 2015, offering a jewelry-making program to children at the Dell Children's Medical Center.
Recognitions followed, including the 2017 National Award from Ernst & Young Global Limited. With a company worth over a billion dollars, Scott achieved $360 million in 2021 sales and appeared on Forbes' list of 'America's Richest Self-Made Women.'
