Want to speak with Albert Einstein? Looking for an AI girlfriend? This Platform makes it possible

Having Albert Einstein help with your math homework, or any other figure, real or fake, is no longer science fiction thanks to Character.ai, a groundbreaking platform that utilizes the power of artificial intelligence to create characters. Character.ai is on a mission to change the way humans interact with AI. The geniuses behind it? Let’s get to know them a little.

The AI Geniuses Behind Character.ai

Noam Shazeer was born and raised in Philadelphia in 1976 to a multilingual math teacher turned engineer. He studied math and computer science at Duke University and had always been interested in computers and probability which ultimately led to his love for machine learning. After graduating, Shazeer’s passion for artificial intelligence eventually landed him at Google in 2000 where he immediately started working on some of the earliest innovative projects relating to machine learning.

In 2012, Shazeer joined the Google Brain team where he truly began delving into the world of AI. It was here where Shazeer met Daniel De Freitas. Daniel grew up in Brazil where he spent his days trying to build chatbots. Shazeer even states that Daniel had been on a “life-long” journey to make intelligent chatbots a reality. After reading up on some Google research papers, Daniel had seen the potential to use Google’s large research database to build a chatbot that works. So in 2016, he joined the Google Brain team and it’s where he crossed paths with Shazeer.

From Google Brain to Character.ai

During their time at Google, Shazeer and Daniel made huge improvements in AI development. Shazeer co-authored a pivotal 2017 research paper called “Attention Is All You Need”, which introduced the concept of Transformer model architecture, a fundamental component of modern AI systems. On the other hand, Daniel was key to the creation of Google’s acclaimed conversational AI, LaMDA. LaMDA enabled more natural and context-aware conversations, and its creation marked a significant advancement in AI chatbots and made Daniel a sort of celebrity in the AI industry. It even garnered a good amount of controversy about the idea of AI gaining sentience with debates forming amongst prominent figures regarding the idea of LaMDA being the first sentient AI.

The Birth of a Disruptive Platform

With this experience and knowledge under their belt, Shazeer and Daniel eventually left Google in 2021 to start building Character.ai, Daniel’s chatbot side project that he had been working on ever since he joined Google. After much work and refinement, the beta was released to the public in September 2022 and immediately started gaining traction. The startup allowed users to create their own customized chatbots, impersonating anyone and anything by using text-based information on the internet and natural language processing techniques.

Success and Milestones

In March 23, 2023, just 16 months after its founding, the company was able to raise $150 million in a Series A funding round led by Andreeson Horowitz, leading to a $1B valuation. Additionally, Character.ai’s innovative approach to AI chatbots has led to the creation of more than 16 million different characters,  and the company's app has been downloaded more than 5 million times. It has also surpassed 200 million users.

Challenges and Ethical Concerns

However, the platform’s success has not come without its fair share of issues. Recently, intellectual property concerns have arisen, as users are allowed to create chatbots based on copyrighted characters and real-life celebrities, leading to questions about ownership rights. Additionally, there are concerns about the technology misleading users into thinking they are receiving professional mental health advice. It has also been experiencing semi-regular server interruptions due to the amount of users on the site. Character.ai has responded to these issues by hiring lawyers to reply to requests regarding copyright issues, and implementing a $10 per month subscription fee to fix the server issues.

Regardless of the controversies, Shazeer and Daniel’s innovative approach to chatbots and language processing has definitely caught the public eye and transformed bot interactions to a platform that millions of people engage with daily.
